Woke up after five yesterday morning to rush and surprise my younger sister, who was taking the last subject of her high school entrance exam. Packing up the gifts I’d prepared long ago, I headed to another city. Seeing so many parents outside the exam venue wearing qipaos and holding flowers, I suddenly felt like breaking down and crying. While thinking about how our family isn’t into these specific moments of ritual, I also envied my sister for having such a great big sister.
